It started with a voicemail from Priya at 11pm, her voice careful in the way people get when they're about to ruin your night.

"Don't freak out," she said, which is what people say right before you should. "I was swiping earlier. Just bored. And I'm almost sure I saw Daniel."

I laughed it off, the reflex of someone who didn't want it to be true. Daniel and I had been together two years. We had a shared calendar, a houseplant we co-parented, a running joke about growing old in a cottage with too many dogs. People like that don't have profiles on dating apps. People like that send each other grocery lists.

But the laugh didn't sit right in my chest. It rattled.

When he came over the next evening I tried to be casual about it, the way you can never actually be casual. I mentioned Priya. I watched his face. There was a flicker, gone so fast I almost convinced myself I'd invented it, and then the easy warmth came rolling back in like nothing had touched it.

"Babe, she's mixed me up with someone," he said, already reaching for my hand. "Here. Look. Check my phone. Go on."

So I did. I scrolled his home screen twice. I checked the folders, the little graveyard of apps people forget about. Nothing. No dating app anywhere. He spread his arms like a man cleared by a jury.

"See? She's lying to you. Or she's jealous. You should be careful who you trust."

That last line is what undid him, in the end. Because he said it so smoothly, with such practiced concern, that something in me went very cold and very quiet. He wasn't defending himself. He was redirecting me. Turning the suspicion around and pointing it at my friend.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I just held onto his phone a moment longer than he expected.

"You don't mind, then," I said, and I opened the app store and typed four letters into the search bar.

He sat up. "What are you doing?"

I tapped install. The little circle spun. And I remembered something he clearly hadn't: deleting an app off your phone doesn't delete you. The account waits. The password lives in the keychain, patient as a ghost.

The app opened. It didn't ask me to sign up. It didn't ask for anything at all. It just slid me straight into his profile, fully built, three photos I'd taken of him on a trip I'd paid half of, a bio that mentioned the dogs we joked about. And the messages. Conversations stacked like firewood. Active that afternoon. Active while he'd been texting me a heart.

The room went silent except for the small, obscene chime of a new match arriving.

He'd had a whole system. Download it when he was alone, message whoever, delete it before he saw me so the screen would be clean if I ever looked. He'd built a machine for lying and never once read the manual on how phones remember.

I set the phone down on the table, screen up, his life glowing there for both of us.

"Priya's a good friend," I said, and I picked up my keys.
