他的游戏不断在一条我太熟悉的街道上标下位置

他洗澡时把手机放着没锁。我本只想关掉一条通知。结果却发现了一张地图,标着他真正去过的每一个地方。

以下完整故事为英文。

The thing that gave him away wasn't a text or a perfume or a hotel receipt. It was a cartoon dragon pinned to a map.

Vince had been playing that augmented-reality game for years, the kind where you walk around the real world and your phone overlays little creatures onto street corners and parking lots. It was harmless. Endearing, even. On Sunday hikes he'd suddenly veer off the trail like a kid, phone held out in front of him, narrating his catches in a voice he thought was funny and that, for a long time, I did too.

So when his phone lit up on the nightstand while he was in the shower and I reached over to silence it, the game was already open. He'd left it running. And the first thing I saw wasn't a creature at all. It was the journal screen, the log of everywhere he'd "captured" something recently, each entry stamped with a time and a tidy little address the game pulled from his location.

I wasn't snooping. I want that on the record, even though there's no one left to say it to. I was going to set it down. But the addresses caught my eye the way a wrong note catches your ear before you've decided to listen.

Tuesday, 9:40 p.m. Thursday, 10:15 p.m. The Friday before, 11 p.m. Different days, different weeks. The same street.

I knew that street. Not because I'd ever lived there, but because eighteen months earlier, before me, Vince had dated a woman named Wren, and once, early on when he was still being honest about his past, he'd pointed her old place out from the car. A short dead-end road that curled behind a shuttered garden center, the kind of cul-de-sac you only ever drive down on purpose. "She lived back there," he'd said, almost shy about it. "Middle of nowhere." I remembered laughing that you'd have to want to be lost to end up there.

He'd been wanting to. Three, four nights some weeks. Always late. Always while I thought he was at the gym, or covering a shift, or "out with the guys, you wouldn't know them."

I sat on the edge of the bed with the water still running and scrolled back. The game kept a record going months. The dragon. A glowing fox thing. A creature shaped like a teapot. Each one a confession he didn't know he was writing, geo-tagged and timestamped, faithfully logging him onto Wren's obscure little street again and again while he told me he was somewhere else entirely.

I screenshotted everything. I don't know what part of me knew to do that, but it did it calmly, methodically, while the rest of me felt like it was sliding off a cliff in slow motion. Twenty-three entries. I counted later. Twenty-three pins on a road no one ends up on by accident.

The shower shut off. I put the phone back exactly as it had been, screen down, and I lay on my side of the bed with my heart going so hard I was sure he'd feel it through the mattress. He came out toweling his hair, smelling like my body wash, and asked if I wanted to order something. I said I wasn't hungry. He kissed the top of my head and called me his favorite person.

I gave it two days. Two days of watching him narrate his little hunts on our actual walks, two days of him reaching for me in the dark, two days of pretending the map in my phone didn't exist. I think I needed to be sure I wasn't crazy. I drove out there on the third night, parked at the mouth of that dead-end behind the old garden center, and waited. At 9:50 his car turned in. He didn't even slow down at the corner. He knew the way too well.

I didn't confront him there. I'm not built for scenes. I went home, and when he got back at half past eleven smelling like someone else's apartment, I had the screenshots already laid out on the coffee table like a hand of cards.

He tried the obvious things first. The game spoofs locations sometimes. He was just passing through. It wasn't what it looked like. Then, when I slid the screenshots toward him one at a time, twenty-three of them, dated and clustered on her street, the lying ran out of road the same way that cul-de-sac did. There was nowhere left to go.

He admitted it had started "a couple months ago." It had been almost six.

What I keep coming back to isn't the betrayal itself, ugly as it was. It's that he caught hundreds of those little creatures over those months and felt nothing, never once realizing the game was quietly drawing a map of his guilt. He thought he was the one playing. The whole time, the truth was just sitting there in plain sight, waiting on a screen for me to look.

I packed a bag that night. I left the screenshots on the table. Let him sit with the map.
