AI & health disclaimer

The Recovery Companion was built to sit with you on ordinary hard days. This page is the honest account of what it is, what it is not, and what it does with what you tell it. It forms part of our Terms of Service.
1. This is not medical advice
Nothing in the Recovery Companion — the plan, the activities, the mood and behaviour tracking, the rituals, the reflections, or anything the AI writes to you — is medical advice, mental-health advice, diagnosis or treatment. It is a structured self-help tool. It cannot tell you whether you have depression, anxiety, PTSD or anything else, and it will not try to. Do not start, stop or change medication or any treatment because of something this app said.
2. It is not a substitute for therapy
Therapy is a relationship with a trained, accountable, regulated human being who can see you, remember you across years, and be held responsible for your care. This app is none of those things. It is a place to put your days while you get through them, and at its best it makes therapy easier to walk into — not less necessary. If you can access a therapist, counsellor or doctor, that is the better option, and we will say so.
3. The companion is an AI
The companion is a large language model. It is not a licensed therapist, psychologist, counsellor, physician or crisis worker, and no one at BetrayStories is acting as one. It is not a person, it has no clinical training, no duty of care and no licence. It writes plausible language — sometimes wise, sometimes wrong. We call it a companion, a guide and a session for exactly this reason: it is not treatment, and we will never imply that it is.
No human at BetrayStories reads your sessions in the ordinary course of running the service.
4. What happens if we see a crisis
We screen what you write for signs of crisis and of distress that is heavier than an app should carry with you. That screening runs before any paywall, trial limit or usage limit — safety is never something you have to pay for.
- If you write something that suggests you may be in danger, the companion stops the recovery work and shows you crisis lines and real-world resources for your country instead.
- If what you describe has been heavy for a while, we will say so plainly and point you towards a professional — gently, once, without lecturing — and your plan, rituals and progress keep working the whole time.
- We record that a screening happened and at what level, with short signal labels and a timestamp. We do not store the message text in that record.
Screening is imperfect in both directions. It can miss real danger and it can flag something ordinary. Please do not rely on it to notice that you need help.
5. Not an emergency service
We do not monitor the app in real time, no one is watching your messages, and writing here does not summon help. If you are thinking about ending your life, if someone is hurting you, or if there is a medical emergency, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line now. Crisis resources for your country are shown inside the app and are free to everyone, signed in or not, paying or not.
6. Adults only
You must be 18 or older to use the Recovery Companion. It is not designed for young people, and if you tell it you are under 18 it will stop the session and point you to services built for you.
7. How your conversations are used
- Stored. Your sessions — your messages and the replies — are saved to your account so you can read them back and so the companion has continuity.
- Sent to a processor. To generate a reply, your message is sent to DeepSeek, which processes it on our instructions. Alongside it we send a small context: up to a few dozen memory facts, the last 20 turns, a summary of your plan, your most recent mood check-ins (up to fourteen, with their notes), your journal entry titles and dates, what you told us at intake (your situation, no-contact status, whether there are children, whether you still live together, and what you asked us never to suggest), counts of the behaviours you confirmed in the last fortnight, the labels of your thought loops, and the summary and takeaway from your previous session. The full list is in section 4 of the Privacy Policy. We never send your email address or account ID.
- Never used for training. Nothing you write trains any model, ours or our provider's. That is a contractual term, not a preference.
- Yours to take or destroy. Export every record as JSON, edit or delete any memory fact, pause memory entirely, or erase all your recovery data — from your account page, at any time. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
- Never transmitted at all: what you type into the burn letter, the thought release and the closure ritual. That text stays in your browser. Closure Court is not one of these: the charges and defence you write there are sent to DeepSeek to produce the verdict and stored under your account until you delete them, which the screen tells you before you start writing.
8. Known limits
- It can be confidently wrong, invent details, or misremember something you said.
- It cannot assess risk, diagnose, or tell you whether what you feel is normal in any clinical sense.
- It only knows what you have told it and what its memory holds — it cannot see your life, your safety, or the other person.
- It works best in English; other languages are supported but quality varies.
- It is not a lawyer and not a financial adviser; it must not be used to decide custody, divorce or money questions.
- It will not help you surveil, confront, punish or win back another person, and we have built it to decline.
9. When to seek professional help
Please talk to a doctor, therapist or crisis line if:
- you are thinking about hurting yourself or ending your life;
- someone is threatening or hurting you;
- low mood, hopelessness or numbness has lasted more than two weeks, or is getting worse;
- you cannot sleep, eat or work, or you have stopped seeing anyone at all;
- you are drinking or using more to get through the day;
- you are seeing or hearing things others do not, or your thinking feels out of your control.
Needing more than an app is not a failure of yours. It is the most ordinary thing in the world after what happened to you.
