I left the monitor running because I missed the sound of my son breathing.

That was the whole reason. Nothing clever, nothing suspicious. We had set up one of those camera things in the nursery the week he was born, the kind that streams to an app on your phone, and I had grown so used to the little blue glow of it on my nightstand that I couldn't sleep without it. So when I packed up the diaper bag and drove the forty miles to my parents' house for the weekend, I never thought to close the app. I wanted to lie in my childhood bed with the baby beside me and still hear that small, wet rhythm of his lungs from the room we'd painted pale green.
