We named her Biscuit because she was the color of one, and because we hoped a soft name might coax a soft animal out of the trembling thing the shelter handed us. The intake notes said "fearful, unknown history, slow to trust." That was generous. For the first three weeks she lived behind the sofa and only came out at night to eat. A dropped spoon sent her bolting. A raised hand near her food made her wet the floor. Whoever had her before us had taught her that people were weather to be survived.
