For eleven years I never once checked Daniel's phone. I want that on the record, because of everything that happened later, that is the part I am still oddly proud of. I trusted him the way you trust the floor under your feet. You do not test it. You just walk.
So when he texted on a Thursday to say the guys wanted to watch the game at Murphy's downtown, I texted back a thumbs-up and a "drive safe" and went to bed early. Nothing about that night felt like a hinge. The dishwasher hummed. The dog circled three times and dropped at the foot of the bed. I read four pages of a paperback and fell asleep with the lamp on.
