Daniel had always been fastidious about the car. He vacuumed the mats on Sundays, kept a microfiber cloth in the glovebox, complained when I left a coffee ring on the console. So when I walked out to the driveway one Tuesday morning and saw the rear of his sedan caked with a thick brown smear, I assumed something was wrong.
