The phone buzzed on the kitchen counter at 11:40 at night, and I almost didn't look at it.
Daniel had texted me three hours earlier. The quarterly deck wasn't ready, the partners wanted it by eight, and he was going to grind through the night at the office with the rest of his team. He'd be home in time to shower and leave again. He even sent the little exhausted face, the one he always used when work swallowed him whole.
