The August sun was warm on my shoulders, the kind of lazy afternoon that felt borrowed from a happier time. Our backyard was green and quiet, save for the hum of a lawnmower two houses down. Sarah sat across from me at the old picnic table, the one we’d bought at a garage sale when our daughter was born. She was cutting her grilled chicken into neat, small pieces, the way she always did. I was reaching for the salad bowl when she spoke.
