I never checked the doorbell app for anything more than packages. That Thursday morning, sitting in a sterile hotel room three states away, I tapped the notification out of boredom. A motion event at 7:02 AM. Probably Mark leaving for work.

The video loaded. There he was, my husband of twelve years, stepping out into the gray January dawn. He wore his navy peacoat, briefcase in hand, looking exactly as he did every morning. A normal exit. I almost closed the app.
