I never thought a piece of mail could unravel a marriage. It came on a Tuesday, sandwiched between a credit card offer and a grocery store flyer. The envelope was official-looking, with the New Jersey E-ZPass logo in the corner. David and I both have transponders, but I handle the bills. I opened it absentmindedly, expecting a routine charge. Inside was a violation notice: a photograph of a silver sedan—our car—passing through the Barnegat Toll Plaza on the Garden State Parkway, heading south. The date was last Thursday, 2:47 PM.
