Daniel came home from the blood drive glowing like he'd cured something.
He had the little gauze square taped into the crook of his elbow and a sticker on his shirt that said BE NICE TO ME, I GAVE BLOOD TODAY. He let our daughter peel it off and stick it to the fridge, where it stayed for weeks, curling at the corners. He told the story at dinner twice, how the nurse said he had "great veins," how he'd almost passed out and they'd given him orange juice and a cookie. I remember thinking, with a warmth I'm ashamed of now, that I'd married a genuinely good person. A man who gave a piece of himself away to strangers on a Saturday morning.
